54-year-old Christopher Ryan, a retired English teacher at James Logan High School in Union City, was found dead Thursday afternoon in unincoporated San Mateo County, south of Belmont along Highway 280. The cause of death is not being given, but his car was found nearby, and Ryan was said to be "at-risk" because he required medication for an undisclosed medical condition.

Ryan was reported missing Wednesday after his sister, Katie Glapzel, was unable to reach him by cell phone for more than 24 hours. She had seen him early Tuesday morning near his home in Redwood City.

Ryan had been a teacher in the Union City school since 1994, and the reason for his early retirement is unclear. The school district announced today that they would be offering grief counseling to those students and faculty members mourning his death.
