Monday night, two men were shot to death while driving near the Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in West Oakland. The men, ages 19 and 28, had been driving on the 1000 block of Filbert Street when they were hit by gunfire. The car apparently coasted two blocks before coming to a stop by Lowell Park at the end of Filbert Street. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Oakland Police, the car belonged to a friend of the older man. Investigators have yet to establish a motive in the killings and no arrests had been made as of this morning. The shootings bring Oakland's homicide total to 97 for the year, an increase from last year the Oakland Tribune reports.

There was another shooting in East Oakland around 10 p.m. last night, as well. A man was shot on the 1500 block of 94th Avenue, but he was taken to a nearby hospital and is currently in stable condition.
