Over at the Examiner today, the free daily paper with the blog-esque crime section has compiled some data on 100 street robberies that took place over 23 days in August and September. The Examiner's analysis concludes "resistance is futile" when it comes to defending your property. That's nothing new, sadly, but taking things one step further we can figure out just who out there is a likely target.
Out of the 100 mugging incidents reported to police between the end of August and last week, there was a two-way tie for which neighborhood had the most muggings. SoMa and the Tenderloin (surprise!) both saw 14 incidents apiece, which doesn't even include the 11 robberies that occurred in the "Mid-Market" neighborhood straddling those two. The Mission was a close third with 13 muggings, and the Western Addition (where we've seen an uptick in phone robberies) rounded out the top five with 10 percent of the incidents.
Demographically speaking, the vast majority (72%) of last month's mugging victims were in their twenties or thirties. Forty of the victims were twenty-somethings. Surprisingly, the gender of the victims skewed away from the fairer sex. Of the 105 victims in these incidents, 58 were men and slightly less than half were women.
Of course, this is a relatively small number of muggings in the grand scheme of things, but in a way, it is a snapshot of who is getting mugged right now. So, remember that next time you're walking the streets of SoMa in search of some late night Thai food. Also: If you are confronted by a ruffian with a keen eye for your iPhone 5, they will probably punch you no matter what. (Sorry.)
