Late last night between 11:30 p.m. and 1 a.m., gunfire rang out twice in Oakland, leaving two young women and an 11-year-old boy in the hospital with gunshot wounds. The first incident occurred on Seminary Road near Mills College, where an unidentified suspect or suspects shot up an SUV near the women's college. The second occurred about 90 minutes later on Makin Road near Highway 880, where a flurry of bullets hit a sleeping boy in the chest and the stomach.
In the Seminary Road incident, a witness arrived on the scene to find the driver of the SUV slumped over the wheel of the car with a gunshot wound to her torso. Another woman in the vehicle also sustained gunshot wounds, but was not as seriously injured and the third victim was cut by broken glass when the windows shattered. The three women told the witness they had been hit by a drive-by, but according to Oakland Police they have not been cooperating with investigators. All three victims were taken to Highland Hospital to be treated for their injuries. No suspects have been arrested.
The second, seemingly unrelated, shooting left at least 16 bullet holes in the front of a home on the 200 block of Makin Road in Oakland, only about four miles from the Seminary Road shooting. Two bullets pierced two walls of the home, striking 11-year-old Luis Duenas in the stomach and chest as he was sleeping in his bed. According to his sister, Luis "got up out of bed and starting running around the house. We grabbed him and told him to calm down. He said - 'I can’t. This hurts too much. My stomach hurts.’ "
The boy was taken to Oakland Children's Hospital in serious condition, but his family members told the local news that he is expected to pull through. Again, Oakland Police had made no arrests as of this morning and the shooting remains under investigation.
