You know that RV across the street that never seems to go anywhere and out of which occasionally stumbles a disheveled person? Well, Supervisor Carmen Chu wants to do something about that nonsense. She's proposed legislation that would limit the ability of large vehicles to park on city streets in various parts of the city.
The problem seems to be a consistent one along the edges of Golden Gate Park, on Fulton Street and Lincoln Way in particular, and in parts of SoMa and on the Great Highway too. KTVU talks to struggling musician Chris Eakin and his bandmates (the group is called Future History... heh) who have been living out of an RV in SoMa and who are skittish about an impending ban. For the moment, they don't have anywhere else to go.
Homeless advocates, as the Ex reports, are up-in-arms about the law, given the numbers of vehicular homeless in these tough times.
Also, what of the Burners who need to park whilst packing and unpacking!? Or the up-and-coming entrepreneurs?
Chu cites the filth and illegal dumping that some of these vehicles are responsible for, as well as the monopolizing of public parking spaces, and the fact that some 20 percent of RVs parked around the city belong to nearby residents with homes.
The ordinance, if passed, would ban large vehicles from parking in selected areas from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. If it's approved at the Board of Supervisors' meeting next week, it could go into effect by the end of the year.
