As is monthly tradition around here, we present our 10 favorite utterances from the August issue of the Nob Hill Gazette, "San Francisco's original social network". Last month, we noted the magazine had not only dropped "Nob Hill" from its name, but had also grown noticeably thinner. In this month's issue: canine wine tasting rooms, $100,000 cars and Publisher Lois Lehrman compares the magazine to her own derriere, for some reason. Observe:

  • "Yes, there’s plenty of panache in this powerful, albeit slim, issue (wish I could say the same for my behind), but the Gazette (and the publisher) should be fatter by September." — Lois Lerhman's Letter to our Readers

  • "When Hollywood gets around to making a movie about a big-time wine magnate, they should call Central Casting for someone exactly like Jean-Charles Boisset: a dashing Frenchman with a pitch-perfect accent, a thriving international wine business, a winemaker wife named Gallo, a set of two-year-old angelic twin girls, and a bulldog named Frenchie." — So, we guess they blew it with that whole Russell Crowe thing.

  • "As indicated, his life story, though non-fiction, is the stuff of great fiction." — Jennifer Raiser, still talking about Jean-Charles Boisset in "Starring Jean-Charles Boisset"

  • "[Jean-Charles Boisset] created a separate canine 'tasting room' on the Raymond grounds, complete with gracious open kennels, a wine cask that dispenses fresh water into bowls, and tongue-in-cheek flourishes that include tasseled draperies and ironic portraits of Frenchie as Napoleon, Louis XIV, George Washington, and Marie Antoinette." — Jennifer Raiser again.

  • "I am not what you might call “a dog person.” This puts me in the minority in San Francisco, where pet dogs not only outnumber children, they are considered children... Come to think of it, I’ve never been a great child person, either" — Gerald Nachman's delightful, anti-dog "The Dog Days of August" column.

  • "Ask ten people what their favorite wines are, and you will likely get 11 answers. Good." — Ed Schwartz' Great Grape Growing Vineyards

  • "Nob Hill is a wonderful neighborhood, but somehow it is missing a comfortable American food restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner." — Lori's Diner operator Man J. Kim, on the possibility of opening Lori's on Nob Hill.

  • "Aston Martin, ever the innovator, offers the Aston Martin Cygnet, a heavily reworked Toyota [Scion] iQ. The Cygnet is the lavishly finished, full leather, full luxo-version of this car and it runs about $50,000. It's described as the 'tender to your yacht,' a city car for those errands not important enough to take the Aston." — Martin Swing on overpriced smartcars for his final column, published after his death on July 3rd.

  • Regarding Fall 2012 gown trends: "This year, the spotlight is on colors that have more than one meaning— such as canary, fuchsia, tangerine, and silver."

  • From the Classifieds: "Memoir Coach. Creating beautiful life stories, perfect for anniversaries, graduations. Harvard grad, Mary Rakow, Ph.D. is an award-winning novelist and beloved writing teacher. Eager to help you give the gift of your life to others."
