Just after 1 p.m. Monday afternoon, a fight broke out on Burr Avenue in Visitacion Valley and quickly escalated in to a shootout that ended in a double homicide. Police have yet to make any arrests in the shootings, but the two victims were identified today as 27-year-old Frederick Glaspie and 25-year-old Marche Daniels — both members of the Towerside street gang known to have a violent history.

Both men were mortally wounded by the time police arrived on the scene. One of the men was reportedly shot in the head. Although the department has yet to officially declare the incident gang-related, SFPD's gang task force was on the scene to help with the investigation.

Glaspie and Daniels were both named as members of the Towerside gang in a court document filed two years ago as part of a gang injunction. In the filing Glaspie admitted to being part of Towerside since he was 14 years old. Daniels, on the other hand, had allegedly been shot four years prior by rivals from the Down Below Gangsters in the same neighborhood as Monday's shootout.

Just hours after Monday's shooting, shots rang out in a drive-by just a few blocks away at Sunnydale Avenue and Rey Street. In that incident, a 37-year-old woman escaped injury when someone in a white SUV opened fire on a group of people standing on the sidewalk. No one was hit by the gunfire, but the woman's car ended up with a couple bullet holes in it.

Glaspie and Daniels' deaths mark San Francisco's 43rd and 44th homicides in 2012.
