Some of you may recall the gruesome discoveries of the bodies of 23-year-old Zoelina Toney of West Oakland and her 17-month-old son Jashon Williams back in November 2009, both of whom were found on the Berkeley waterfront. Immediately police and family members suspected Toney's boyfriend Curtis Martin III, whom Toney had been dating in secret because, well, he is kind of a horrible person. Martin, now 41, had already served six years in jail for the beating death of a girlfriend's child, three-year-old Devin Brewer, in 1994. Today, Martin pleaded guilty to two counts of murder in an Alameda court.

It was an unusual move, given that jury selection had already begun in the trial, and Martin is getting nothing in exchange for his plea. The prosecutor, in fact, said he'd never heard of an instance of a defendant pleading guilty in order to get life without parole, which is what Martin is guaranteed to receive when he's sentenced on December 3.

Martin's lawyer said he decided on the guilty pleas in order to avoid the publicity that would come with the trial.
