Yesterday, San Francisco Design Week kicked things off in drunken style at Jasper's. And today we bring you a brief list of choice events to hit up during this week's festivities. What is San Francisco Design Week, you ask? Well, in association with AIGA (the professional association for design), it's a way to reach out to the "20,000 Bay Area design professionals as well as local businesses, non-profits, entrepreneurs, students, the design-savvy public" and others to highlight "the diversity and professionalism of the design community around the bay." The end goal is to "raise public awareness of the impact that all design-graphic, product, interior, fashion, architecture, advertising, et cetera-has in the San Francisco Bay Area." OK? OK.
And with that, here (among a vast array of interesting-sounding things to do) is a list of noteworthy events for this week. They are:
TUESDAY, JUNE 12
What it is all about: "Smart system design and service design go hand-in-hand as we move forward to the next generation of non-screen based interfaces. New devices and technologies are presenting opportunities for companies to create invisible and seductive service experiences. But can we fall in love with things we can't see?"
Panel of experts: Navneet Dalal, Co-Founder and CEO, Flutter; Shelley Evenson, Researcher, Design and User Experience, Facebook; Yoon C. Lee, VP Global Product Innovation, Samsung; Egan Schulz, Design Director, Mobile, PayPal; Olof Schybergson, CEO, Fjord; Tim Twerdahl, VP Product, WIMM Labs; Rochelle King, VP User Experience and Product Services, Netflix
Chris Albrecht, Creative Director, GigaOm
What it is all about: "Leading modern furniture showroom Zinc Details presents "SF Local Design Market," a combined exhibition and design mart that will run from June 11 through June 17 with an opening on June 12 from 6 to 8 pm. In partnership with SF Design Week, 'SF Local Design Market' is a cross between a conventional exhibition and design pop-up shop where Bay Area designers, artists and makers will be showcasing their products, which will also be for sale. The exhibition is sponsored by RDI, the Retail Design Institute, San Francisco chapter."
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13
What it is all about: Getting rich! More or less. Also: "The mobile sector is changing from month to month, as platforms fragment and screens multiply. Consumer expectations are evolving, corporate alliances are shifting, and tablets and other new form factors are expanding the definition of 'mobile.' All of these factors affect both your product design and your business strategy. We'll discuss the principles behind the major apps on today's top platforms, and give you practical tips to make your apps engaging, usable and delightful."
THURSDAY, JUNE 14
What it is all about: "With Shutterstock as AIGA's Official Sponsor for Creative Inspiration, this live design competition event takes creative inspiration to a new level. Designers battle it out across three rounds in front of an audience cheering and jeering their every move. Local superstar judges determine a winner on breakneck speed and masterful stock skills used to answer one question alone: What will you inspire us to do?
Emcee, DJ and Beer and Wine. (please note, food will not be served at this event so bring a snack or eat before the battle begins!)
Think you have what it takes to go head-to-head against the Bay Area's best designers? If so, send your full name, best 4 portfolio pieces and a statement about you and your work to [email protected]
Contestant entries must be received no later than 6/12. Must be 18 years or older to enter."
FRIDAY, JUNE 15
What it is all about: "After an exciting week of inspirational lectures, workshops and networking, join us and your new friends at Arkitektura as we look back on a week of all things design. Lounge around the showroom of Arkitektura. Meet plenty of new people who all love design from various design disciplines!"
