Some of you may recall the horrible incident in June of 2008, originally thought to have been connected to road rage, which claimed the lives of a father and his two sons while driving on Maynard Street in the Excelsior district. 21-year-old MS-13 gang member Edwin Ramos was arrested for the murder of Tony Bologna, 48, and sons Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16. A third son, Andrew, who's now 20, was also in the car and survived, and he fingered Ramos as the shooter, though his defense attorney has maintained that Ramos was only the driver of the car from which the shots were fired. Today, Ramos took the stand in his own defense, and painted a picture of an abused child who had fallen into gang life in order to find acceptance and security.

Ramos was an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who had joined an off-shoot of MS-13, Pasadena Locos Sureños after being a member of MS-13. The murder was a case of mistaken identity, according to prosecutors, in which Ramos believed Bologna, or one of his sons, was a Hispanic gang member responsible for a murder earlier that day of one of Ramos's friends and fellow gang members.

The trial has been going on for three months now, and Ramos is facing life in prison.
