Polyamorous former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, remarkably still campaigning for the GOP presidential ticket, was in the Bay Area this weekend to speak at the California Republican convention in Burlingame. Before giving a speech to the Bay Area Republicans, Gingrich chatted with political reporters Carla Marinucci and Joe Garofoli of The Chronicle. The conversation was, in a word, fascinating.
When the fearless duo asked Gingrich to explain what he means by "San Francisco values," a term popularized by many fist-shaking rightwingers like himself, he brought up a moment in 1984 when, while campaigning in Union Square, he met a "transvestite" who had invited him to an exorcism for evangelical fundamentalist Jerry Falwell.
