Despite previous rescue efforts by Virgin America and S.F. Animal Care & Control, it seems San Francisco still has a surplus of the pocket-sized pooches thanks to the sort of people who obsess over Paris Hilton's accessories or a fast food spokespup from 15 years ago. Tomorrow, to fill New York's demand for Chihuahuas as Valentine gifts, Virgin America will send off another shipment of dogs rescued from Animal Care & Control in a special red carpet flight from SFO to JFK.

As Bay City News reports, the West Coast Chihuahuas will escape their pound puppy lifestyle when they "travel in style in the main cabin of a passenger plane on Valentine's Day, with a red-carpet send off at the gate." During their flight, they will be pampered with "in-flight treats and plenty of toys" before they arrive in New York. After that we assume someone will promptly place them in a Louis Vuitton dog carrier and whisk them to away to an Upper East Side penthouse where they will be fed nothing but foie gras and caviar. Or whatever it is rich people are feeding their dogs these days.

Local Chihuahua rescuers, on the other hand, should drop by the Peninsula Humane Society where the shelter will be waiving adoption fees for the 21 Chihuahuas they have available.
