Are you familiar with the pickleback? The questionable practice of chasing a shot of whiskey with pickle brine originated on the East Coast where the combination has appeared as everything from Brooklyn bar novelty, to hangover prevention mechanism, to a molecular mixology experiment. Here on the West coast the trend has been slowly finding a foothold as local whiskey drinkers (Jameson is preferred by pickled purists, apparently) discover the magic/disgust of chasing mid-shelf whiskey with the briny dregs of a pickle jar. So it was only a matter of time before some enterprising bartender combined cheap whiskey and locally-sourced pickle juice.
As local drunk bartender/internet personality Broke-Ass Stuart fills us in this afternoon, the high brow/low brow shot and chaser combo will begin making an appearance at Dear Mom starting this Wednesday. The brown stuff will come from a bottle of George Dickel's whiskey. While the briny green stuff will come from the guys at Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen, who have been pickling their own kosher dills at their Ferry Plaza pop-up for some months now and will soon be going legit. Dear Mom, on the other hand, has quickly become a popular hangout for people who enjoy cheap beer, arcade games, French food and missing their mothers — all under one roof. So there's that.
The whiskey and brine combo will make appear on the drink menu at the very Mission-friendly price of $4.
