Just when you thought they might be hibernating, more than a dozen tents went up last night at a new Occupy Oakland encampment on the 2000 block of Peralta Street near Mandela Parkway. They're calling the space the Cypress Triangle, even though no one seems to have called it that before.
The lot the occupiers are occupying is vacant, but it's unclear whether it's privately owned land, or whether the gang might be angling for another eviction to get themselves back in the news. In any event, this camp puts this stalwart crew of campers a bit closer to the Port of Oakland, which has been the latest subject of discussion among Oakland city officials. Just yesterday, Governor Jerry Brown gave an interview in which he said he'd give Oakland Mayor Jean Quan "whatever help is needed" to keep the port open in the event of another attempted shutdown by protesters, and that she "should keep the port open."
Meanwhile, the Occupy Oakland website doesn't mention anything about this new encampment, but there's an announcement of a planned rally tonight to discuss the takeover of a building to become the Occupy headquarters an action that is scheduled for January 28. "The intention is that this space will become the new home for Occupy Oakland, providing ample space for all of our committees and activities, room for assemblies, and sleeping space." Also, they still hope to maintain a presence in "Oscar Grant Plaza."
