San Francisco's 48th homicide of the year occurred late Friday evening. Bay City News reports that SFFD crews found an elderly woman lying unconscious on the floor of her home near St. Mary's Park, just south of Bernal Heights. At the scene, the responding emergency crew also found a "combative" suspect wielding a knife. The suspect stabbed himself in the neck before lashing out at the rescue workers, at which point the firefighters managed to subdue him and lash him down to a medic's backboard with the help of police officers.

The victim, identified as 72-year-old Hao Mei Wu, was declared dead at San Francisco General Hospital. Although SFPD have called the death a homicide, they have yet to release the woman's cause of death. The suspect was also taken to SF General, where he was treated for his injuries.
