In the wake of harsh layoffs at SF Weekly, the Bay Citizen has literally saved journalism. Or one journalist, at least: the charity case online newspaper has hired Matt Smith, whose name you might recognize from many a Weekly cover.
Bay Citizen political reporter Gerry Shih announced the news earlier this morning by way of a delightfully self-conscious tweet, which was later confirmed by the Bay Citizen proper:
We are so excited to welcome Matt Smith, formerly of @SFWeekly, to our staff! Citizens, get ready for some more great journalism!
