READING: Author Adam Mansbach will be at City Lights performing a complete reading of Go the F**k to Sleep, a kids book that's just for adults. (It's a phrase that SFist finds ourselves muttering almost nightly, among millions of others.) (7 p.m., City Lights Booksellers, 261 Columbus Avenue)

POETRY: In anticipation of Litquake kicking off this weekend, S.F. Public Library presents the first annual Poetry World Series, in which two teams of up-and-coming Bay Area poets take turns batting up to a poem topic pitched by the audience. The panel of judges include Daniel Handler and Michael Krasny. (6 to 8 p.m., Latino/Hispanic Meeting Room A & B, Main Library, 100 Larkin Street)

MUSIC: This month's Penny Arcade music showcase is all acoustic, featuring the stripped down tunes of Meridians, Andrew Cervantes & Paula Frazer, David & Joanna, and Rags to Riches. (8 p.m., Make Out Room, 3225 22nd Street)
