The Farmers Market at Civic Center, the only San Francisco outdoor market to sell live chickens, voluntarily decided to ban the sale of all live poultry come May 27. Why? Due to pressure stemming from a lawsuit by kooky animal rights advocacy group LGBT Compassion. SF Appeal reports: "The move is voluntary, according to a woman who answered the Heart of the City Farmers Market telephone and identified herself only as Kate."
But not everyone is happy about the market's decision to yank live birds from the menu. Jayce Benton, owner and operator of Arbuckle-based Bullfeathers Quail, explained to tell the Appeal, "The bottom line is, there won't be any difference...All [LGBT Compassion] has done is take away choice: They took away [market-goers'] abilities to support small farmers. And they singled out Chinese people."
This comes on the heels of a bill put forth bu California Assembly Members Paul Fong and Jared Huffman introduced a bill that would prohibit the sale of shark fins in California. Both Senator Leland Yee and S.F. Mayor Ed Lee have come out against the bill, saying that the proposal is an "assault on Asian cultural cuisine."
