Last Friday, a man in a passable Caltrans uniform knocked on the door of a home in Woodside, claiming to be performing inspections for possible post-storm landslides. As it turns out, while the man at the door was talking to the homeowner another suspect slipped in the back and stole jewelry out of the master bedroom.

According to the Examiner, when the homeowner got suspicious and asked for ID, the Caltrans impostor "called out the name, 'Steve' and then left promptly in a late-model silver SUV." So, remember folks, always check for proper identification from your public workers.

This could have ended up much worse.
