For the most part, Jimmy Fallon’s late night television show leaves a lot to be desired, but Wednesday night he may have put himself on the historical map forever by unleashing Odd Future, or OFWGKTA, onto the senses of the part of the world who isn’t necessarily immersed in what’s going on in underground hip hop.
Wednesday night’s Fallon appearance was easily the greatest musical performance on late night tv since Queens of the Stone Age did “Little Sister” with Will Farrell on SNL a few years back, and will always be remembered as what took OFWGKTA from being initials found all over Twitter and Tumblr to becoming a force to be reckoned with in hip hop, and modern music at large. But still, who and what are Odd Future, you ask?
Odd Future hail from Los Angeles, and call themselves a hip hop collective featuring at least nine (possibly more) members, all of whom fall between the ages of 16 and 23. Combining catchy yet gritty beats, lyrics addressing violence, sex, drugs, and less than favorable peers of theirs in hip hop, and an overall eerie, disturbing aesthetic, the group, using social network sites like Tumblr and Twitter generated a rabid fanbase by releasing free mixtapes and solo records for the group at large, as well as individual members like Tyler the Creator, Hodgy Beats, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis, Frank Ocean, Mike G, Left Brain, Taco Bennett, Jasper Dolphin, and Syd tha Kid.
