A new and alarming study out of U.C. Davis projects that snowfall in Tahoe will decrease by a third in the next forty years, and by two thirds by the end of the century, assuming humankind continues to ignore climate change trends. Researchers from Davis and U.S. Geological Survey completed the study recently, which is one of the most detailed and comprehensive projections of its kind to be done on the localized level.
According to the study, precipitation in the Tahoe Basin will shift from being about 30% snow to 20% snow by 2050, with earlier melting that could cause earlier draughts in the region. Per the Sac Bee: "The changes will also result in the lake itself falling below its natural rim for perhaps decades at at time, with dire consequences for water users in Reno and beyond. The lake is also likely to see significant algae growth." That whole Keep Tahoe Blue campaign now takes on new meaning...
Historical data already shows that the ski seasons in Tahoe are getting shorter, so those season passes probably shouldn't keep going up in price. The good news here is that property up there should also get cheaper, so there's that.
