The SF MTA reports that for the fiscal year that ended June 30, Muni ridership decreased by 10 million riders last year, a total of 4.4%. The biggest decrease was seen on the F-line street cars, followed by buses and the light rail, with an overall average of 591,732 riders per day. Perhaps due to fare increases, fare income was actually $2.5 million higher than expected.

Muni spokesman Paul Rose says unemployment and service cuts are to blame, and that they "anticipated ridership to drop more than it did." There does not appear to be a statistic for how many people arrived on an underground platform at rush hour, saw that there were no trains coming and the entire system was melting down, and stormed back up to the street to find another way home/to work.
