From the District 5 Newsletter comes a nice pat on the back for the smiley supe, seen here on a recent trip to Uruguay. In addition to being really excited about the America's Cup and possessing a general distaste for plastic bags, Mirks (as we like to call him around the neighborhood) is also a California Coastal Commissioner and apparently an early advocate of the Save the Waves Coalition's new World Surfing Reserves initiative. Naturally, Mirkarimi's support ensured the first such reserve was one of California's own resplendent beaches and the program, which is modeled after the UN's World Heritage Sites, will be recognizing Malibu's Surfrider beach as "California's definitive pointbreak" and an iconic location that transcended surf culture to make the Southern California lifestyle seem appealing to the rest of the world.

For interested surfers, a "paddle-out celebration" to the aforementioned pointbreak and an evening fundraiser on October 9th will christen the new reserve and launch a stewardship plan to protect the beach's "environmental, cultural, social and economic benefits" while presumably removing all plastic bags from the vicinity.
