Sunday's 6.2-mile SF AIDS Walk pulled in more than $3 million. An estimated 25,000 participants showed up to help raise much-needed funds for HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and care.

This comes on the heels of a cautiously optimistic advance in the development of an AIDS vaccine. Earlier this month, government scientists "announced the discovery of three human antibodies, the strongest of which neutralizes 91% of strains of the HIV virus." The discovery, according to the Wall Street Journal, is being billed as "a 'renaissance' in HIV vaccine research."

Update: Per SFist commenter Manys query, we've asked AIDS Walk SF to divulge their overhead/costs for the annual walk -- information that, oddly enough, doesn't appear on their site. We'll update as soon as we hear back from the organization.
