Following on the success earlier this season of American Idiot (which just premiered on Broadway this week to a NYT accolade of "thrillingly raucous and gorgeously wrought"), Berkeley Rep returns with another rock musical based on a single album. Matthew Sweet's 1991 ode to love, Girlfriend, long a cult favorite, gets a sweet and unsentimental reinterpretation in this stellar production, written by Todd Almond and directed by Les Waters. Almond has taken Sweet's heartfelt but decidedly heterosexual songs and universalized them, writing the book for this show about two teenage gay boys who discover love for the first time the summer after they graduate high school.
