Everything from yoga near the beach to a hot tub party to comics performing while lying down on the sidewalk (including Nato Green and Kamau Bell) occurred on Saturday during a large sit/lie law protest. Sidewalks from all over the city -- Haight and Cole, 16th and Mission, Folsom and 7th, 16th Avenue and Moraga -- all played host to concerned citizens attending the Stand Against Sit/Lie rally.
SFist has already discussed the sit/lie law brouhaha in the past, and with with fervor from commenters, but we're not going to choose sides. (We'll let advocacy journos like C.W. Nevius, the fine folks at SF Bay Guardian, and Streetsblog do that for you.) The sit/lie Ordinance, for those of you who need a refresher, would make it illegal for certain residents (i.e., homeless, gutter punks, tweakers on the downhill slide, etc.) to sit or lie on city sidewalks.
Last week, KPFA had a debate around the sit-lie law, featuring Gabriel Haaland (a Haight resident) and Ted Lowenberg (president of the Haight Ashbury Improvement Association).m Listen to it here.
John Coté at The Chronicle also did a piece. "I don't think there is any need for such a law. I think all it will do is encourage the police to stop people they don't like," a Bernal Heights resident opined.
