The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors is preparing to vote on a proposed name change for Mt. Diablo today. The new name if they give a thumbs-up? Mt. Reagan. Huh.
This latest effort to rename the towering East Bay mountain (yes, there have been many) comes from local crazy man, Arthur Mijares, who reportedly claims that God told him during prayer time that we should re-name the mountain after The Great Communicator. Mijares believes that Diablo, (which means "devil" for those of you who didn't take high school Spanish) is an evil name unworthy of such a majestic peak. Right. Not Mt. Jesus, not Mt. Pope John Paul II, Not Mt. Mother Teresa, but Mt. Ronald Reagan. Ronald Ray Gun, the man who made a mildly popular movie about raising a pet chimpanzee before hollering at Louis Vuitton spokesperson Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down some art wall in Germany. We heart American religion (and world history).
As can be imagined, opposition has been fierce with a multitude of letters denouncing the name change flooding Board offices. There's even a Facebook page dedicated to opposition to the measure. Regardless of the Board of Supervisors' determination, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names will take up Mijares application in the near future.
