In another case of "mo' money, mo' problems," the dudes over at the Mavericks big wave surf competition are deep in the impact zone. Jeff Clark, the booted co-founder of the Mavericks Surf Ventures, which has produced the Mavericks competition since 2003, is suing the company for owed payments, and breach of contract. The lawsuit also claims that Keir Beadling, the co-founder and chief executive of Mavericks Surf Ventures has "no interest in surfing other than as a source of corporate and personal profit."
Beadling wants to expand a new Mavericks clothing line into surf stores across the estate - a tough feat in a market crowded with Quiksilver's, Rusty's, and Billabong's of the world.
Clark, a 52-year old surfer is largely credited with starting the craze of surfing at Mavericks. He surfed solo at the dangerous break for fifteen-years, since he was a teenager - before the professional circuit caught on. Some surfers are wary of participating in the contest without his blessing. But with $150,000 cash prize, we expect the 24 surfers will show up. With winter storms approaching, the contest could take place next week.
