Week Around the Ists

Published May 31, 2009 · 6:55 AM PDT / Updated Dec 29, 2018 · 8:02 PM PST

  • LAist, too, had a whirlwind of a week regarding the upholding of Prop 8, prompting various protests and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to call the state "fundamentally broken." Case in point, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed cutting all welfare and 80% of state parks from the budget after voters rejected a number of deficit solutions.
  • SFist, as expected, also tried recovering from the shock of this week's Prop. 8 ruling.

  • Phillyist dined out with young'uns.

  • Torontoist, currently obsessed with adorable animals, chronicled the plight of Wiggles the Pig, a six-month-old piglet who was rescued after falling off a livestock truck on the highway.

  • Chicagoist made the most of the three-day weekend by checking out the annual Candy Expo, a new rooftop bar, and talking to Gothamist co-founder Jen Chung on the eve of their fifth anniversary.

  • Shanghaiist saw a U.S. basketball player ignite a furious debate on the internet when he was pictured throwing money at high school students in Hunan Province.

  • Bostonist tasted ($2 worth of) $2000 scotch.

  • Londonist wheeled out some velocipede-inspired urban sights.

  • Seattlest interrupted its coverage of Seattle's Oprah-approved bacon salt empire to note there's a new bacon-flavored vodka in town.

  • Gothamist watched as vehicular traffic was banned along five blocks of Broadway in Times Square, bringing out the fans and the haters.
