San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced today free Wi-Fi to all the residents of a Sunnydale housing development. This is part of the city's "Network of Community Networks" plan that makes free wireless networks available to over 2,000 units at San Francisco Housing Authority developments. Or, in more vulgar terms, the projects.
Outside Sunnydale's technology, Newsom said, "To improve our economy, it is critical that we bridge the digital divide ... The launch of this free Wi-Fi network at the Sunnydale housing development is another step forward in our goal of providing free Internet access to all San Franciscans."
While some argue that this is a bit Antoinetteish of the Gav -- expanding free WiFi to poor folk who, sadly, can barely afford a Sony PSP much less a MacBook Air -- there are a few decent programs out there that offer free or drastically reduced computers and laptops to low-income residents. So, see you on Craigslist, Sunnydale.
