We typically poke fun at coalitions. You know, for giggles. But not SF Bike Coalition. Because they do good work. Great work, in fact.

Take, for example, the rally they're holding tomorrow to save the Market and Octavia bicycle lane, which is scheduled to get exfoliated from Market Street. See, after two and a half years of no new bike lanes, the MTA plans on asking a judge to remove a bike lane "at one of the most dangerous intersections in the city next week."

What should be done other than ripping out the lane, you ask? Well, SFBC had this to say:

Instead of removing a bike lane and rolling back bike improvements as proposed by the MTA, we urge City leaders to instead move forward with the Planning Department's superior plan to expand on the improvements--a plan that includes installing raised bike lanes with colored pavement for safety--a great idea that the SFBC fully endorsed--check it out here: http://www.sfbike.org/?octavia . We cannot let the MTA take a huge step backwards that will endanger cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists alike.

So, if you want to help try keeping the lane put, here are the details:

What: Emergency Rally To Save Market and Octavia Bike Lane
When: Tomorrow, January 16 at 7:30 a.m. - 10 a.m.
Where: Market & Octavia

Also, if you can't stay at the rally, feel free to sign their petition. And if there's one thing we love, it's a protest with options. Oh, and be sure to check out the Save Market and Octavia Bike Lane Facebook page for more information.
