FILM: The latest incarnation of Fritz Lang's futuristic classic about the working class and city planners, Metropolis (1927), is its most complete. According to LaSalle, this version is a "new incarnation, the work of a consortium of German archives, runs a full two hours long and uses every scrap of available footage, and from the best possible sources." Also, it's beautiful--an early wonder in art direction. In addition to being very entertaining for a silent film (because, come one, they be really boring--even if Cat Power is providing the score), it set the stage for such classics as Star Wars, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Blade Runner, and even Plan 9 from Outer Space.
