SFist Sara says to see the second screening of this movie TONIGHT! 9:30 screening at the Roxie!
From the look of it, you'd think the Indiefest Another Hole in the Head movie Blood Car was made using the "First Feature for $10,000" model, and the guys responsible are more than happy to have you believe it. But with a premise that begs slogans like "No Oil, just Blood," you'd have to be daft not to see the political parallel. It's Cronenberg-gross and Miike-graphic but totally made in the USA.
Protagonist Archie (Mike Brune) is a kindergarten teacher and vegan: working tirelessly to create the world's first wheatgrass run engine. With the price of gas at around $40/gal, a guys' gotta get clever to move up from 10 speed to toyota. Sweet Loraine (Anna Chlumsky, of My Girl fame) works at the veggie stand, and draws x-rated fantasies involving Archie, her most faithful wheatgrass patron. Across the way is Denise (Katie Rowlett) who runs a Meat Stand. Guess what ends up making the car run? .
Blood Car is funny from beginning to end, and always deliberately absurd. To its credit, it's effortlessly so. Nothing in the film is what you'd expect and the jokes you're waiting to be gentled down, never are. They only get rougher, more biting and closer to the bone.
The guys in charge of the film [check out SFist Sara's interview of them! -- ed.] are reticent about the film's apparent politics, saying that "politics and oil" aren't words that make you want to laugh. We guess they think the film speaks for itself. You wanna make light, make light. There's room in Blood Car for all kinds.
SFist Sara, contributing. Preview of Blood Car above. It's a little violent, so be prepared, squeamish ones!
