Well, it's official, or at least as official as official gets-- the A's are moving to 'the Burbs. Tuesday they held a press conference with all the official types and even unveiled a logo because as we all know, Cartesian marketing philosophy states that nothing in this world exists without a logo. The A's even dragged out Bud Selig and there's nothing like a speech by Bud Selig to make everyone all shiny and happy.
Let's give you just a little flavor of the new, East Bay A's of Fremont (let's call them EBAF for now-- the fact that they'll be called "of Fremont" is official): the press conference was not held at the place where the stadium would be built or some other pastoral type scene, but at Cisco HQ in San Jose. There it was announced that Cisco was going to spend buckets of money to have the field named for them. Say hello to Cisco Field, everyone. What shall we call it, then? The Cis? Co Field? The Big Suck? In terms of cool new gadgets, the A's also announced that the scoreboard will be visible on both sides of the field so people outside the stadium can see (that's really cool, actually)
As for Oakland, they actually sound kind of happy about all this. According to those in the know, the A's don't really bring in a lot of money for the city and them moving might actually save them money. Ouch, that's like hearing from a recently made ex that it's good because it'll allow them to have more fun. A's fans who live in Oakland, however, aren't so thrilled.
See, that's the thing about all these sorts of sports teams-- they may not be worth it in terms of dollars and cents, but worth it in those certain kinds of intangibles that you can't deteremine. Things like pride and love and joy the way that sports can bring people together. You can't measure any of that stuff and that might be the most important thing of all.
