The San Francisco Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board will be meeting next month to decide, well, not much, really. They're going to choose 10 buildings or places to recommend to the Board of Supes for possible landmark status. Wow, that's power -- we dream of the day we can be part of a meeting to pick things to suggest other folks meet about.

The big one up for discussion is the good old Doggie Diner head. We have to admit to some fondness for this statue, as we hope our own dachshund will one day don a hat and make us a milkshake. But is it a landmark? We're leaning toward yes, but are open to a discussion on this topic. What do you think?

What makes something a landmark, really? Is it universal belovedness, conformity to a standard of aesthetics, or historical relevance? Are there any local landmarks that you question the relevance of, or places you think should be landmarks but aren't? Let us know in the comments!
