"There is something to be said about coming from an 'apathetic' or non-judgmental viewpoint," he told us via email-interview -- too often, he says, discussions of important issues become "either a shouting match ... or friendly chats amongst like-minded individuals." It's Sean's hope that by stepping back from our convictions -- offering up a collective "or whatever" -- we might reach a more nuanced dialogue. To that end, he's made available a selection of bumper stickers (the blogs of yesteryear) on his site: they relay messages such as "no opinion," "I have an opinion but I'd rather not say," or our favorite, "minding my own business." Upon coming to America, Sean says, he was struck by bumper stickers' proliferation. "What is it with all these bumper stickers?" he says. "Everything from 'I love chess' to 'abortion is murder.'" So it seemed like the only logical forum for the open-opinion movement.
It would be great if "minding my own business" became the norm in The Land of the Free, rather than our country's current Gladys-Kravitz-like national climate. Will we ever be able to enjoy a day free from self-satisfied lectures? That sure would be nice. Or whatever.
