Last week, the legislature defeated a bill by Assemblyman John Benoit (R-Palm Desert) that would have made it illegal to watch porn from the comfort of your car. The problem with watching porn in your car? Do we even need to say? Yep, just imagine you and the kiddies are coming back from their soccer match and pass one of those big cars that have TV screens in the back seat. The kids look over at what's being watched and well, the next thing you know, you're telling the kids about how sometimes when mommy, daddy, and the neighbor love each other, sometimes they do things to each other to show them how much they love each other.
Don't think this happens that much? Think again. It even has a name- "drive by porn" (warning, link is NSFW) and has already been banned in several red states like Tennessee, Louisiana, and Virginia, and almost became law in Oklahoma. And while the bill got defeated this time around, Benoit says that between new technology and the popularity of TVs in cars, it'll become more of a problem in the future. As for the CHP, they admit that watching porn could be considered a distraction for everyone involved but doesn't differentiate between porn and any other major distraction that can occur in a car.
Which is all well and good, but SFist wonders if the truly offensive thing isn't necessarily the glimpse of the porn, but the glimpse of what the people are doing while watching the porn.
