Like toddlers fascinated by heavy machinery, we are so excited to report that they're going to be moving giant cranes underneath the Bay Bridge again!!! Remember the last time they did this, back in 2002? They made everyone get off the Bay Bridge so it wouldn't sag, and they had live .mpg footage on sfgate.com, and the 22-story cranes missed the bottom of the bridge by about 25 inches? So. Fricken. Cool!!!

The cranes, which are just outside Marin right now and ultimately destined for the Port of Oakland, were supposed to come through today, but the same high waves that brought us Mavericks have also made the water level in the Bay too high. They're going to try again tomorrow between 11:30 and 2. Bay Bridge traffic will be stopped for about 15-20 minutes as the cranes make their way over. There's not as much of a problem with the Golden Gate Bridge because it's a little higher up (about 10 feet of room to move, as opposed to the Bay Bridge's 2-3).

(On a sadder note, the man who so ably steered the cranes through in 2002 passed away just last month of cancer. We're sure the new pilots will do him proud.)

We found this picture on the San Francisco World Trade Club website, but we suspect it's actually from sfgate.com
