Sure, everyone's talking about the Big Game. But what about the little game? High school football playoffs in the Central Coast Section (Spartan Spirit!) start tonight (maybe) but not without controversy.

SFist got a bit of a headache understanding it all but it seems that parents of the Scotts Valley High team are taking the CCS to court looking for an injunction to stop the playoffs from proceeding without their team. The Scotts Valley team finished fifth in their league with a 7-3 record. They are upset because they were bumped from the playoffs in favor of Mipitas, who had fewer points and a worse record.

Wha? Well, it seems, the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League that Milpitas plays in gets to pick 3 teams to send to the playoffs. They picked the two teams ranked first and second and Milpitas, ranked fourth. The third ranked team had enough points to qualify on its own. That seems a little sneaky but those are the rules. The league has been asked to re-write their rules for next year regardless of the outcome of the case. Had they just chosen the first three, Scotts Valley would be in based on their points accumulation.

If they win the injunction, playoff games scheduled for tonight would be cancelled while the CCS figures out how to re-seed the teams - the games would resume in about a week.

The case is scheduled to go before a judge in Santa Cruz at 1 p.m. today. If nothing else, we figure this sets up a wicked Milpitas/Scotts Valley rivalry for years to come.
