The California Supreme court just issued their decision in the case regarding Gavin Newsom's move to let the city issue wedding licenses to same-sex couples. And it's not good for our newlyweds - the court said San Francisco broke the law. The decision is not a death-knell - the court's ruling only spoke to the narrow issue of the city's authority to issue such licenses. They did not rule on the larger issue of the constitutionality of same-sex weddings. Looks like it's time for a trip to Provincetown, MA.

SFist thinks that this was a beautiful, historic event for San Francisco and the nation. Who could deny the deep and sincere love between the couples - for a moment they got to feel the way any of us would when tying the knot. The lines of folks from around the country, the tears, the flowers, the fabulous outfits. Hell, breeder marriages end in divorce half the time - why not give the 'mos a chance?

SFist also thinks it was a great piece of political theater. Da Mayor came out a winner with the LGBT community either way - win, and he's a hero. Lose, well, at least he tried. What does this mean for his national political aspirations? We don't know. This could come back to haunt him in the red states if all this "New Kennedys" BS comes true and we see Newsom taking on Obama for the Democratic nomination in a few years.
