According to the Snitch:

Two executives of Village Voice Media, the parent company of the SF Weekly, were arrested in Arizona last night in connection with a story they wrote for Phoenix New Times this week. According to the Arizona Republic, Jim Larkin and Mike Lacey were charged with revealing secret grand jury information, a misdemeanor.

Larkin (VVM CEO) and Lacey (VVM executive editor) got nabbed due to an article that they wrote together (together?), "Breathtaking Abuse of the Constitution" -- a story about exposing "egregious misconduct on the part of [Maricopa County] prosecutors." Huh. OK then.

First came CW Nevius who weighed in with yet another story on the issue, this time saying that even in liberal, tolerant, San Francisco, residents might not be feeling so liberal and tolerant when it comes to dealing with the homeless. As evidence, he points to one of those online polls SFGate ran about the issue in which 90% of the people said they wanted something to be done. We, as a rule, hate those "polls" because it's actual scientific value is nil as it's all determined by people who were motivated enough to play along and doesn’t factor in those who were too lazy to.

In response, Steven T. Jones wrote about the column on the Bay Guardian's blog. In the posting, Jones compares Nevius to Ken Garcia and also says that Nevius is wrong to say San Franciscans are not so down with the homeless. He then accuses the Chron, and Nevius, of trying to stir things up to play to all the suburbanites out there as they are the only ones who hate the homeless, not local residents, and yadda...yadda...yadda... Spanish American War. Steven then posts the email back-and-forth he had between him and Chuck which is kind of interesting if slightly cringe-worthy in the same way as the Bill Maher show on HBO is. Not to be outdone on the fun, Garcia himself joined in with a column about homelessness, mainly to use it as an attempt to slam Chris Daly.

We're sure SFist Rita will detail all of this in We Read the Weeklies but this week's Bay Guardian seems to be the "Homeless Issue," which is just like Rolling Stone's Hot Issue except without Kid Rock on the cover and fun story about The Office inside (editor's note: more Toby). In the issue, the SFBG weighs in the recent fracas with an editorial and a lengthy story about how much all of these "Quality of Life" citations are costing the city.

We Read The Weeklies

Last week's winner, the deceptive SF Weekly. <a hre...

Arts & Entertainment

bar

Barry Bonds

Bay Area

blogs

carmen chu

chicken

dennis herrera

dining

drinking

east bay

east bay express

election

SF Events

Features

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

Gavin Newsom

Get Killed

Hardly Strictly

hardly strictly bluegrass

housing

I Want

interview

journalism

kids

Lady Sovereign

lauryn hill

laws

Matt Smith

Meg White

Merc News

Metro

MF Doom

music

SF News

Newsom

SF Politics

Question Time

Robert Haaland

Rogue Wave

San Jose

San Jose Metro

satire

sex

sf

SF Weekly

SFist Ced

The Guardian

train

Weeklies

Weekly

rita

Last week's winner, the deceptive SF Weekly. Letters abound, either outraged by the fake Barry Bonds story or entertained by the elk. It's good to live in SF! Meredith isn't so happy with an appetizer bar; SFist Ced isn't so happy with Meredith! Recent disaster concerts in the Bay Area -- at least Lady Sovereign and Lauryn Hill showed up, unlike MF Doom.
Next up, oh, let's say the Guardian. Gavin Newsom's interview with the Guardian sounds like it was a train wreck! Cover article: Oh shoot, it's the endorsements issue. The Guardian's endorsements issue always reminds us that we have to start paying attention to the upcoming election again. Shoot. We'd even forgotten Question Time is back on! A fake Meg White sex tape? Oh, that's sick. He's talented; seems to have similar political to ours; married to her, wonderful her; surfs; from Southern California; lives in the Bay Area; and above all else, is attractive. Then we figured it out: we didn't hate Sean Penn, we feared him. He seems like the kind of guy who could and would kick our ass right-quick if he ever encountered us.

But you know who really wants you to know how much he loves the Oscar winner? LA Weekly's Joe Donnelly. Read his interesting yet fellating article of Mr. Penn here, or for your convenience, our truncated version below.

"One of Sean Penn’s best friends is stuck there in San Quentin, maybe for good, and Penn cites this unfortunate fact as one of his main reasons for choosing to live in this corner of Marin County."

"...that was a lesson in humility."

"...picture if you will a sleepless and forlorn journalist chain smoking..."

"...there are deep crags around his cowboy eyes..."

"He’s muscular like a construction worker."

"I like this guy already. A lot."

"'You’re a good writer,' I say."

"'That’s my baby,' Penn grins mischievously."

We Read The Weeklies

Last week's winner, the SF Weekly: <a href="http://www.sfweekly.com/2007-09-19/...

Arts & Entertainment

Adam Werbach

Arcade Fire

Bay Guardian

berkeley

berkeley rep

blogs

Bush

Chris Daly

City Attorney

culture

Daly

dining

east bay

east bay express

SF Events

Features

film

Film Fest

fire

gay

Get Killed

gun

hair

Hank Williams

housing

housing market

Karaoke

LCD Soundsystem

love

Marke B

Matt Smith

Metro

movies

murder

music

Newsom

San Jose

San Jose Metro

sex

sf

SF Weekly

SFist Ced

Sweeney Todd

the city

tim redmond

Toronto

Weeklies

Weekly

rita

Next up, the Bay Guardian: You know we love Tim Redmond, but we had kind of a hard time following his non-market-based argument about the SF housing market. We must try this dumpling place! Free stuff in Dolores Park. And these graphics are GREAT! Santino from Project Runway is in town. Oops, they called Lindsay Lohan "newly sober" (print edition only). True when they went to press! And Ed Jew's horoscope: "you're being called to take responsibility for some things that need fixin'."

The power of investigative journalism, folks! ....and HA! We had that Gavin Newsom uses the word "extraordinary" a lot! Also, the Weekly proposes some more codes of conduct for the Board of Supes. Where's "wipe" on that list? And Will Harper gets some troubling responses to his Craigslist iPhone personal. Cover article: does transgender identification need to be treated? (read this one! it's really good!) Saturday -- Bardot-a-Go-Go and boooo to the Independent Press Association for ruining the businesses of a bunch of local zines. Meredith braves 16th and Capp Street; we got a good chuckle out of SFist Ced's rejoinder. Cults with bands. And the Bouncer says the new Bruno's is kind of boring (who knew you used to be able to sneak in through the back door?)
