We Read The Weeklies

sfweekly85.jpgLast week's winner, the SF Weekly: What? MORE letters about Rainbow? Matt Smith threatens to derail Newsom's gubernatorial campaign if he doesn't do something about parking. Rape awareness campaigns in the Castro. Cover article: a man who went through the SF court program designed to assist the mentally ill homeless. Ha! We like the headline "Fresno? Fres Yes!" A locally-written musical about San Francisco life. This picture of the dancing Starbucks baristas is excellent. Meredith ventures back to the Mission to try that place that opened in the old KFC (she had the lobster). Minnie Driver uses the word love 54 times on her album. And former SFist Violet Blue guests in the Savage Love.

Next up, the San Jose Metro. Extending closing time by an hour in SJ really did cut down on the number of fights! Busy busy busy at SJ City Hall. Gary Singh branches out from San Jose and goes to.... Campbell. The Dianne Feinstein conflicts of interest guy gloats a little. Cover article: You might actually be addicted to texting. A cool-sounding contemporary music festival in Santa Cruz. An exhibit of quilts, rugs, and other fabrics made during wars at San Jose's Museum of Quilts and Textiles.

After the jump: The East Bay Express and the Bay Guardian, along with the Weekly of the Week and the YTD count.

The East Bay Express: Angry letters from vegans and Scientologists. A rape crisis center focusing on Latinas. Online only: Chauncey Bailey and the EBX's own run-ins with Your Black Muslim Bakery. Hey, a lobbyist tried to blackmail someone into buying Ignacio de la Fuente a snazzy new car! Embrace your transgenderism. Cover article: why can't they do anything about Jack London Square? We're not doing very well in Iraq. And the woes of the Lovemakers.

sfbg88.jpgAnd the Bay Guardian: A bunch of independent alt-weeklies are running the same cover story this week, about a progressive journalist killed in Mexico. Marc Solomon proposing giving out plastic bags for the homeless to excrete in. Wait..... plastic bags????? More DA investigations of City College. Jobs section: Going to the coronor's office. Immersion schools. Adult education<. The graphic for the Craft Mafia event on Sunday is cute. Sonic Reducer takes the skinheads bowling, takes them bowling. The scene at the local Showtime at the Apollo auditions. Oops, sorry we missed the Best of the Bay party this year! Looked like fun! That new cafe on 14th and Guerrero. And the sex columnist makes a very good point to a dominating-sounding lady about her supposedly-cowed boyfriend.

Weekly of the Week: Okay, maybe we just feel guilty that we didn't manage to scare up a copy last week, but we really liked this week's Metro! Did you know texting can kill you?????? Fun! That, plus the SJ city counsel's vacations this year, the Feinstein follow-up, and the quilts of war definitely caught our interest this week. Ups to Eliza Strickland's SF Weekly piece about the Behavioral Health Court and the EBX's tribute to Chauncey Bailey too.

YTD: SF Weekly: 10; SFBG: 9, EBX: 7, Metro: 5.
