Sean Penn To Play Harvey Milk, Matt Damon To Play Dan White

milktwinkiewhite.jpg
Local movie star, sometimes activist, and Tosca regular Sean Penn will play gay for pay in the long-incubated version of Randy Shilts' 1982 "The Mayor of Castro Street". (An amazing book for those of you who have yet to read it.) He'll play murdered San Francisco Supervisor and gay rights activist Harvey Milk, who was shot and killed along with Mayor George Moscone by Supervisor Dan White. Perma-boy Matt Damon gets to play the hot piece of crazy ass that was Dan White.

No word yet on who gets the choice diva role of Dianne Feinstein, but her part had best steal the film. How could it not? The career-making footage of Feinstein telling the media about the assassinations is priceless. (Here's an old, somewhat moving NBC Nightly News report on that day in 1978, featuring Feinstein's announcement.)

A notorious method actor, we wonder how far Penn will go to get this part juuust right. Because, Sean? We're here for you, and we're gentle.

Read more about it here and here.

Who will play Gorge Moscone?

How about George Clooney?

Matt Damon and George Clooney were BOTH fabulous in "Syriana"....

Marc Chamot

MAAATTTT DAAAAMOOOONNNNNN!!!!

I think Bea Arthur should play Feinstein.

The REAL STARS of the era... Who will play (singers) Sylvester and the Two Tons O'Fun (Izora Rhodes and Martha Wash)?

Jójo, San Francisco

Applause for Cement Brunette. Overall, this casting makes me very happy. Too bad Tyne Daly's too old for the Feinstein part.

I think Suzanne Pleshette would make a great Dianne Feinstein.

usually IMDB has projects listed as pre-production for actors when they're in concept/rumor stages. neither sean nor matt have any mention of this.

Ruth Buzzi = Dianne Fienstein

the dianne suggestions are all wonderful, but i think they need to go with someone much younger. she was in her 40s in '78.

...although, yes, ruth buzzi is timeless.

Because you think I was totally serious? Wow, I bet you're real fun to go out with.

Deirdre Lovejoy?

Ruth Buzzi and Bea Arthur are both great choices for DiFi but if they're looking for someone who really understands what "Diva" really means, I pick Babs Streisand.

There needs to be a scene where mayor Babs is given the news before she makes her famous public speech. Her response something like, "Oy Vey- me the Mayor? I've got already a rich husband. So why is God punishing me..."

I'd love to see her in the typical frumpy dress with pearls Feinstein look. She'd need a lacquered "Ann Miller" wig.

Have the real DiFi play a short cameo role, something nutty like Dan White's mother...

Buzzi would be better playing another BOS member at the time, Carol Ruth Silver. She was very close to Milk.

Glenn Close

While she may not be a diva, she is still totally awesome.

i want to play harvey's twink lover who hanged himself, even though i'm no longer a twink.

White milk and Twinkies--THE San Francisco treat!
