Our furious, fabulous five for last week -- the first week with a new guy in the top spot! -- follows:

1) The history behind this red, white & blue Muni bus was a mystery no more, thanks to a guest comment from "Retired Muni Operator."

2) Our very own SFist Leanne shared a conversation she overheard on the bus in reference to some recent shootings. Yeesh.

3) Thanks to an anonymous guest (REGISTER, people! We want to give you credit!) who shared with us a wild link about a SATANIST! Double yeesh!

4) cat not only commented on how silly aspects of the NYT's coverage of our mayoral race was and made sure we knew what up with Matt. G, she also took one for the team by writing a letter to the editor of the Old Gray Lady -- then provided an update on the national media's current obsession with our local politics. That's like commentary overtime. We're going to give her time and a half.

5) Finally, good comment by ievans, who, in reference to something Officer Andrew Cohen told us, points out that loyalty shouldn't be given blindly or unconditionally.
Despite the weird holiday schedule, there was plenty of excellent conversation.

1) We enjoyed (Not SFist)Jeremy's response to Rita's review of Mission Pie for several reasons. First, he filled in some good additional details. Second, we should all talk about pie more often. Finally, as we almost missed this insight since it's a "guest-comment," it's a good opportunity to remind long-time commenters to PLEASE REGISTER. The benefits are multitudinous. Who wouldn't want to see all the comments they've made with the click of a button?

2) and 3) iris talked about the concept of "edgehogs," responding to our "Ask A Muni Driver" top 10 pet peeve list. It's something that everyone hates, but she verbalized it and shared an amusing name for the despicable practice (for which she cited the N Judah Chronicles, one of our favorite sites). Thanks, iris! On the same thread, we enjoyed bornandraised's comment, which gave the student's perspective on having to wear those horribly large packbacks, even on the bus. It ain't the kids' fault!

4) More transportation woes! SFist's Jim posted a pic and discussion about the Octavia Boulevard ramp, which led to much spirited discussion. We appreciated mariconsoy's take on the situation: a little historical perspective, a little opinion, a very good comment.

5) Rounding out the Top 5 this week, we apprecited President Camacho sharing his eyewitness account of the 4th of July incident in Dolores Park where a young drummer's hand was injured by an errant explosive. We hope he shared that with the proper authorities as well.

Whew, sorry to end on such a downer -- more talk about pie, please! See who'll end up in our Top 5 next week!

Top 5 Comments of the Week!

The "!" is because we've been out of town and we're so, so excited to be back.
1, and 2) There were a bunch of great comments on the story titled "Surprise: Parking Garage Company Wants to Build LA-Style Garages in SF." These from murphstahoe ("Quit blaming "the rich". Start blaming "The Stupid"), and CRS (who maintained a level head and appropriate tone despite an apparently unpopular stance) were particularly well thought out and moved the dicussion forward. Like we say often at Top 5 HQ: just because we don't necessarily agree doesn't mean that we didn't enjoy your take on things.

3) It may not be surprising that another parking story, "Let's Talk About Parking Some More," spawned our next in the "Top 5." ChinaNob not only brought the strong opinion on "car sharing", but made a reading recommendation as well. It is summer, after all.

A non-parking-related winner! Number 4 last week was from MistahHM, who had an interesting point about businesses needing to take some responsibility for their garbage output. Funny that our commenters make better points of Gavin's "get rid of trash cans" plan than, well, the mayor's office. Plenty of good comments against it too.

Number 5 goes to KWillets' comment about what's going on with Supervisor Daly -- because, if nothing else, his assessment of "professional public relations people" totally nailed it.

We believe that our soon-to-be-implemented new comments system will be a big help, and most of you stayed within bounds and were a great help in policing too -- but, please, in the meantime, we'd remind you intelligent folks to continue to be responsible commenters throughout.

Even so, there were some gems this week, some high-level discussion where people brought the insight, the knowledge, or the funny -- for everyone's betterment.

1)With truly our favorite comment this week, That Chick gets all "meta" (and really funny) by commenting about commenting (and this here "Top 5"). We couldn't have said it better ourselves, That Chick.

2) The often-funny fizzandpop makes the cut this week with a rather cathartic rant in response to Lev's latest "Tale of Mere Existence." Thank you fizzandpop -- we feel better just reading that.

3) "ohnoedjewnews" chimed in with some funny news (that we subsequently got confirmed by photo evidence). "Quickly resign." Ha!

4) So, we're sure thatguywhokeepscorrectingthings will find something to nitpick us about in this very post, but in the mean time, we'd like to point out his well-reasoned comment regarding taking stuff you see on the Internet (including SFist, kids) with a grain of salt/a bit of skepticism. While this story was legit (about a potential juror who was in a jury pool with Ed Jew), the principle he brings up has merit.

5) A commenter called Alex (the other one) had some good insight and shared his knowledge on calling emergency/non-emergency police numbers via the cellie.

As SFist is community driven, we enjoy picking out some of the best comments that you folks contributed -- the ones that raised the discussion level, taught us something we didn't know, or made us laugh.

1) First, we'd like to recognize "leftalone," who purports to work for the embattled Mr. Ed Jew, and wanted to tell us "two stories to get off [his/her] chest." Insider info, especially if we believe it sounds credible, goes straight to the top of the list. Thanks, leftalone.

2) DG's comment on the budget situation offered some very good insight.

3) We love it when the subjects of one of our stories comes onto SFist to comment. Thanks, Mr. Sugermonster! (a.k. mike sugerman). It also didn't hurt that he identified himself as "a regular reader and a fan of SFist." Flattery will get you everywhere.

4) We enjoyed Nad's tough-but-fair assessment of the state of the Chronicle these days, and hope that Phil Bronstein, the subject of the interview where the comment was left, will take note of his measured, constructive statements.

5) Finally, on the subject of the shootings in the Western Addition: many of you engaged in an excellent conversation regarding police and housing and funding. For the most part, it was a very well thought out, even-tempered, engaging discussion. We're going to cheat and proclaim the whole discussion a "Top Comment." Probably one of the best things we read last week, anywhere -- thank you sfmike, jerry jarvis, "J", Jeffrey W. Baker, tom, and everyone else that participated.
Come, let us gaze boldly into the amazing future together, where events such as these will affect you ... in the future.

As you may or may not know, readers of SFist are permitted to submit responses to our incredibly incisive writings. These Complimentary Sentiments, or "com-ments," form the lifeblood of our work, as without input from our audience we are like blind actors stumbling about on the stage, constantly in danger of tumbling into the orchestra pit. Our corporate masterminds are always on the lookout for new and exciting technologies to improve the commenting process, and now at last the story of their search can be told.

You may all prepare, in the coming months, for a revamped commenting system on SFist. All commenters will have the opportunity to get profiles, so it'll be easier for to identify yourself and link automatically to a list of your recent comments. (Just like how it works on the Gawker sites, one might observe.) Anonymous comments will still be permitted, much to the relief of the Newsom administration, but if you're commenting without using a profile, you won't be able to choose your own name -- it'll just show up as "anonymous." And other readers will have the option of hiding all anonymous comments, so if you don't use a profile, your comments might never be read.

Why are we introducing these breathtaking changes? Gothamist explains,

We've made these changes because the old comment system was constantly getting snarled with spam, and we wanted to give our readers a personal page here on the site.

Just LOOK at how happy those lesbians outside City Hall are! (Despite the one on the right having what looks like a dislocated elbow.) They're celebrating SFist's brand new super fantastic orgasmotronic commenting technology! Yes, friends, thanks to a team of magical elves, you can now comment of the posts faster than ever. Each post now has an expandotron-powered commenting form built right into it -- no more clicking "comments" and then waiting for the individual-entry page to load! Now you can comment from the safety and comfort of SFist's front page! Whoo!

We hope you enjoy this new groundbreaking feature, which we invented all by ourselves and nobody else anywhere on the entire Internet has ever done before, ever. Let us know -- in the comments! -- how it's working out for you. The next feature we're working on for the site: embedded MIDI files on every single page! Stay tuned!

SFisting: We Ogle The Weekly's Rack With Cake

We were excited last week to see a big sexy pair of boobies on the cover of the...

misc

drinking

Eliza Strickland

fun

Hot

Hot Stuff

New York

porn

Recipes

San Francisco

sex

sf

SF Weekly

SFisting

Weekly

violet

We were excited last week to see a big sexy pair of boobies on the cover of the SF Weekly -- and we were tingly all over to see that they were inviting us in to read about the San Francisco debut of New York's flagship grrrl-powered sexy party, Cake. But then we got really confused, as all the words like "objectify" and "male gaze" made us dizzy -- until we decided to make a drinking game out of it, of course.

What really made us confused is that we didn't learn anything about the party (was it fun?), but instead got a seven-page lecture on how porn is bad for women and how the women who go to these parties really can't be having fun because they don't know what life is like for real sex workers. Huh? We know a few local, fun-lovin' sex workers who had a blast at the party -- we guess the problem is that they mask their pain from the objectification of the male gaze with all that fun, so it's hard to tell.

Anyway, we thought we'd ask Emily Kramer from Cake (and co-author of the hands-on female sex empowerment book A Piece of Cake: Recipes for Female Sexual Pleasure, and the Cake blog) what we should do about Weekly writer Eliza Strickland's issues, and what the Cake party was really like.

SFist: Do you want me to spank Eliza Strickland with a copy of A Piece of Cake: Recipes for Female Sexual Pleasure? I'll *bring* it!

Emily Kramer: Ha! I think Midori should give Eliza a spanking for not including her performance in the piece. By the end of the night the Hot Stuff guests were gathered around a stage, on which Midori expertly presented a light kink show. In fiery latex, she used fetish, ropes, and toys in a display of female dominance that surely inspired fantasies for all.

SFisting: Your 'Fisty Valentine

While the rest of us will most likely weeping into our Jell-O shots at the Mint while wailing "Fighter" into the Karaoke machine this wee...

misc

Betty

Bombshell Betty

Carol Queen

culture

dance

SF Events

fun

Karaoke

Monster

movies

neighborhoods

On Saturday

Queen

San Francisco

San Francisco Sex Information

sex

sf

SFist Violet

SFist Violet Blue

SFisting

Thomas Roche

Valentine's Day

Violet Blue

violet

For instance, this Friday you could meet legendary "Happy Hooker" Xaviera Hollander at the Center for Sex and Culture, where she'll be answering questions and telling us all about the happy hooking.

We're starting to think that the Haight's Red Vic Movie House, a worker-owned theater with comfy couches and yummy popcorn, is hitting that age (you know that age) when they think about sex like, all the time. Sure, the Red Vic is 25 now and all grown up, and we feel really bad we didn't buy the Vic a beer four years ago, but we remember reaching 25 and suddenly getting all sex crazy again. Or maybe it never went away. Regardless, a look at this month's coming (ahem) attractions at one of our favorite movie houses is very revealing, indeed. As in hardcore, 100-year-old porn and two weekends of unintentionally hilarious 3D porn classics.

This weekend, the Red Vic is running the adults-only feature, "The Good Old Naughty Days" which features 69 minutes of porn filmed between 1905 and 1930. The first major theater release of a porn movie since 1972's Deep Throat, we have no idea why it got renamed from "Polisson et Galipettes" ("Rascal and Somersaults") into is current clunky moniker, but it's still really neato to be able to see porn made over a century ago. Those beautiful girls and randy guys are likely no longer among the living, but for a few bucks we can see them cavorting, rutting and acting out the centurian's version of the pizza delivery guy porn skit brought to life.

And don't think that because the porn is old it's any softer than it's contemporary cookie-cutter counterparts. Oh, no, dear reader, quite the opposite. This collection was intended to be shown as an appetizer for brothel patrons' entertainment while they waited for their "date", and it contains material far riskier, raunchier and far less restrained by modern gender and homophibia perceptions than anything coming out of Porn Valley (not to mention better bodies). Vintage come shots, bend-over-boyfriend action and mixed gender couplings are just a taste. What's more, it's rumored that real film professionals were behind the cameras, as evidenced by the eloquent lighting, elaborate costumes and expressive set design.

But our good old naughty friends at the Red Vic aren't stopping there; they not only want to put porn in our faces but in our hot little laps, too; namely with two upcoming weekends featuring the campiest 3D porn films to ever straddle the big screen. That's right, 70s porn in 3D! Imagine the horror, er, we mean, possibilities. Well, whether you think that "Disco Dolls in Hot Skin" (Jan. 13, 14) or "Lollipop Girls in Hard Candy" (starring John Holmes, Jan. 20, 21) are made to frighten, titillate, arouse or annoy, it sounds like a great excuse to kick back on a Red Vic couch, nibble that fresh 'n tasty popcorn. Like we need an excuse to nibble anything.

Hot nights at the Red Vic in January (click for showtimes; no one under 18 admitted, duh):
"The Good Old Naughty Days" Friday the 6th and Saturday the 8th
"Disco Dolls in Hot Skin" Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th
"Lollipop Girls in Hard Candy" Friday the 20th and Saturday the 21st
