Today's Murder Count

crime_prevention.jpgFor those of you keeping track:

--In Oakland, five people have been killed in the last 48 hours (from noon on Wednesday to early this morning). The one this morning is murder number 64 in Oakland.

--In SF, they're investigating the death of Joe Konopka, a neighborhood anti-crime activist from the Upper Haight. No one's giving out many details but it looks S&M-related. Konopka started the group Residents Against Druggies, which confronted dealers on the streets, and he had run for Supervisor twice, the last time in 2000 (where he got 700 votes).

--And a man was critically injured in a shooting in Hunters Point last night.

that is sobering news. 5 human lives taken in 48 hours in a city the size of oakland. I don't know the answer to the problem, but this kind of mindless violence has to stop.

if you agree with me that we are 1100 police officers short in san francisco, please email the 3 supervisors that run our public safety committee at the emails below.

i did the homework to figure out we have that few based on the metrics of cops per citizens in nyc.

please help!

I was riding the 48 an hour ago, and there were too middle aged gentlemen both talking about how their son/relative had been shot over 3 and 5 times respectively. (I don't know if they meant all at once or on different occasions.)

They said both victims survived and laugh about it now. One of the men was on his way to see his son at General, who was one of the shooting victims from Monday.

They were both pretty matter-of-factly shaken up about it... They mentioned video games and not going where there's killing going on.

We need a mayor who takes this seriously. Not one who puts on a show... one who will get busy actually doing something constructive to stop the street violence all related to illegal drugs and no gun control.

Oh hush now guest#4 - the great god Gavin does NOT like criticism

Seriously, how many more murders & how far does the crime rate have to spiral upwards before the citizens of this City say "ENOUGH!!" to Mayor PR Script????

I've said it before here: he has done n-o-t-h-i-ng
