Now that boozing, urinating, and nudity have been banned from the ING Bay to Breakers race, a run famous for boozing, urinating, and nudity -- seriously, we're sorry; this is partially our fault -- residents have sounded off on the B2B Fackbook page.

Jon Schwartz: Hey ING! Great call. Way to ruin the number one greatest day of the year. You just gave me huge motivation to boycott everything related to your irrelevant company. Fix this mistake or plan to pay the consequences of a wrath so fierce, so strong, so unbounded.

A cold future lies ahead for you my friend, a cold cold future. SO very cold!

Joshua Bolitho: If this ban goes through, I hope the skies rain urine.

Tyler Heschong: Really ING? Changing what has become a near 100 yr tradition because those in charge can't properly plan a race. pitiful.

Main complaints related to alcohol: public urination and garbage.
Solution: rent more portable bathrooms and place them more frequently on the stretch near peoples homes before the park and place dumpsters along the route.
Cost: instead of paying additional $ to the SFPD for increased enforcement (aka no fun police), pay for the proper solutions to keep Bay to Breakers the SF tradition that it's gained legendary status for.

Danna Gutman: I'm actually going to close my ING account this week. Most of the balance had already been transferred somewhere else, but I think this is a good reason to close it.
Yes.

Rumor ia that the torch run might----go through Berry Street. You know, that little strip of street near the AT&T park? That borders China Basin? Near SF Weekly's office? Next to the cocaine-like coffee poured by the good folks over at Philz?

Anyway, the UCSF shuttle bus that goes through there had a sign saying that Berry Street "would be closed [tomorrow] but 4th street would be open." Which would make sense: it's a skinny slip of a street with tall buildings surrounding it, perfect for ample police presence. But we'll fill you in with more when (of if) we know the route for sure.
might

Watch Today's Tibet/Olympic Torch Protest/Rally/Star Sighting/Melee Live

Can't make it to today's Tibet rally? He claims that the protests that will occur during the run will be a strong statement, especially since it's the torch's only run in Northern America and its an election year. China’s "complicity in the genocide in Darfur" and the Sudan are the focus of his article. Let's dive in, shall we?

My friend Valentino Achak Deng, a refugee from Sudan, just got back from southern Sudan last week where he was beginning construction on an educational complex in his hometown. He reports that along the southern border, there have been weekly clashes between the Sudanese Army and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army, a rebel group that fought a long and protracted war with the government in the 1980s and ’90s.

Hundreds have been killed, and a good portion of the residents of the south fear there will again be war. If this happens, it could make the conflict in Darfur look like a skirmish.

Grrr.

While other media outlets, including SFist, have already claimed that the torch will make its way near AT&T Park and the Ferry Building, Mayor Gavin Newsom "says keeping the route under wraps is intended to make it more difficult for people to plan disruptions."

Also, as the Beijing Olympics draws closer, the list of potential boycotting countries grow larger. France, masters in the art of boycotting almost anything, might eschew the games if any coverage is censored. Muni issued an alert yesterday afternoon that said simply, "Emergency - Powell line cable cars back in service." Oh no! Emergency! Cable cars unleashed on an unsuspecting public! Save yourselves! Run for the hills! Oh no wait -- the hills are exactly where the cable cars WANT you to run!

Okay, okay, we jest. Obviously it's just a poor choice of words, not peril. We can't begin to guess why someone thought that "emergency" was an appropriate word to describe the reopening of cable car line -- perhaps the only good news to have come out of Muni in recent memory -- but anyway it made us giggle. Oh how we giggled. The giggling fools, that's what people called us.

Ever since the 68 city-funded cameras started rolling, our city's surveillance program has resulted in a single arrest. That was over 19 months ago.

Why the lag, you ask? Well, for starters, "choppy" video streaming, above, at 16th and Mission streets. According to the Chronicle:

Run on a modest budget, Mayor Gavin Newsom's surveillance camera program has produced footage that is disjointed and less clear than the nearly seamless and sharp quality of video that the devices are capable of delivering, a Chronicle review found.

The difference can be dramatic, leaving police with less potential evidence. A review of videos taken last year by four cameras at 16th and Mission streets found a striking problem with the cameras' frame rate, or the number of images produced per second.

On average, the Mission District-perched cameras didn't even average one frame per second, making it difficult, if not impossible, to snap, trap and prosecute our city's most randy mischief makers. I'm biased...Swarm Gallery!

What's your take on the art scene here?
Accessible and abundant. It's exciting to be a part of historically, but difficult to say if the momentum of this visual art scene will be fruitful for commercial galleries in Oakland, specifically. Oakland's been "on the brink" for 30 years. Despite this uncertainty though, I wouldn't have opened shop anywhere else.

How did you get involved with Swarm?
I met my business partner in 2005. I gave him a proposal for one of his buildings. I wanted a multidisciplinary arts space with a gallery, studios, artists workshop, print shop, maybe a cafe. Our working name for the space was "hive labs" (based on the collaborative concept, but that name was too commonsensical) -- We eventually came up with "Swarm" and that stuck. The original concept was too heavy of a financial obligation for me, so I decided to par down and "grow the business." Swarm opened in March 2006 and is a place that brings art and people together in innovative ways. The business model includes the gallery and project space, 11 artist studios open to the public during gallery hours, lectures with art world professionals, artist receptions and creative-based events. It's a pretty synergistic creative environment.
