SFBC Director Leah Shahum with a bevy of local politicos, including Supervisors Ross Mirkarimi, Bevan Dufty and Chris Daly, as well as Senator Carole Migden and Assemblymember Fiona Ma

Despite yesterday's blustery weather, there was a good turnout for the news conference at the corner of Market Street and Octavia Boulevard. Everybody was on hand to cheer on Fiona Ma's AB23 bill, which would allow the installation of a traffic enforcement camera that would bust those making illegal right turns from inbound Market to the freeway onramp at Octavia.
If this bill becomes a law, then you'll be seeing scary "Photo Enforced" signs popping up around this intersection in a year or so. It will look a little something like this crudely Photoshopped image. Get up to speed on this issue by clicking here or here or here or here or here or here or here or here. Other coverage is here and here. Keep up to speed by checking out the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition website.
Let's stay safe out there!

This is an excellent bill ... I hope it passes. I hope they also eventually are able to use cameras to nail folks who ignore speed limits downtown - pedestrians are taken for granted too often by drivers downtown.
If this turns out to be legal, cameras busting illegal turns elsewhere could be nice - e.g. illegal lefts from 19th Ave or Sixth Street that back up traffic for blocks at a time.
will we be able to get images below the waist- just in case the defendant has a creative excuse that would need to be validated- all belts, blinkers and lights were flashing and held the drive in comfort and safety?
How about speed cameras all over the place (just like they do in England)???
Just think of all the money our benevolent gubmint could confiscate from us...errrm, I mean revenue to fund yet more thoughtful, useful projects.
As long as the jaywalkers get busted too, Rincon.
Hey now, Jaywalking is a right. Driving is a privilege.
Amen Jas.
Last night on Channel 2 news, they were interviewing a bike guy, on his bike, helmet & earbuds in his ears... talking about how cars are breaking the law. Um, Mr. Bike Rider? So is having music pumping into both ears while bike riding!
Noticed that dude on Channel 2 as well.
He probably doesn't know that what he looks to be doing is illegal.

Busting jaywalking is fine with me .... laws are pretty meaningless if they're only enforced selectively and against certain folks
There oughta be a law! Except for me!
Actually in CA the red light cameras are eminently fair. As opposed to some states, where they are a racket, with processing outsourced to Pakistan or someplace, in CA a sworn officer must review the photo and write the ticket, and must do it in a certain period of time (like 25 days or something).
I know this because I almost ran a red light at Van Ness and (?) Broadway a few months ago. It was 4 AM, I was NB on Van Ness and that time of day the lights are perfectly timed to turn green just as you get to them - until you get to Broadway. That light turns red just as you get there. Too late, I made a valiant effort to stop, but rolled into the crosswalk.
Flash! Flash! And by the third Flash! I had backed up until I was out of the crosswalk. I never got a ticket, and I can only think it was either run of the mill SF Gov't incompetence, or more likely, because we live in a great state that requires a real police officer to look at the pictures and recognize I was making an honest effort not to run the light.
When do we get muggercams installed on Stillman Street?
Yes, dude, dude, dude, no, dude, yes
Why didn't they just take the keys away from Migden while they had the chance? Pot meet kettle...
