• A federal watchdog investigation uncovered that a now-former US Army general lost classified maps on a train in Europe, while also suffering a concussion after a boozy dinner. [The Huffington Post]
• Witnesses in Pennsylvania and Ohio spotted a suspected meteor accompanied by white streaks Tuesday morning, which the National Weather Service and Nasa confirmed was a fireball that hit the ground near Cleveland, Ohio. [BBC]

• A San Francisco judge, Judge Sylvia Husing, ordered the release of the suspect, Tony Sheravaughn Phillips, accused of assaulting a member of Mayor Daniel Lurie's security detail. The judge noted that Phillips "was violently assaulted" first by the security guard, and while he has a troubling history of not showing up for court for other "repetitive" behavior, she released him pending another hearing on Thursday. • Lurie went on social media Wednesday to respond to today's report that the FBI has been warning law enforcement agencies around California of the possibility of a surprise drone attack from Iran, saying there are "no imminent threats" to San Francisco. National:

• The Pentagon told Congress Wednesday that the first six days of the war in Iran cost over $11.3 billion. And we are now on Day 12. [New York Times]
• Iraq's ports company said that 38 crew members were rescued and at least one was killed in Iranian attacks on oil tankers in Iraqi waters in the Persian Gulf. [CNN]
• The Iranian sports minister has confirmed that the Iranian men's soccer team will not be competing in the World Cup in North America this summer. [ESPN]

• On a lighter note, Mayor Lurie got to sit down with Sam Smith and have coffee at Poesia Cafe in the Castro on Tuesday, and produced this little video in which Smith says he's having a "love affair" with San Francisco, and that it is the most beautiful city in the country.

The consequences of Trump's (and Israel's) war with Iran could hit very close to home if Iran, or one of its proxies, were able to launch a drone strike from a vessel in the Pacific aimed at California.

The warning was vague but nonetheless chilling. As ABC News reported Wednesday morning, law enforcement agencies around California were warned by the FBI in February that Iran could be seeking to retaliate against the US by launching a drone strike somewhere in the state.

The text of the late February alert was as follows:

We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United States Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the US conducted strikes against Iran. We have no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack.

We are just 12 days into this war — or conflict, as many in the Trump administration want to call it — with Iran, and Tuesday marked the heaviest day of attacks so far within the country.

Iran has continued launching missile and drone attacks at US allies across the Mideast region, and the idea that they would like to attack somewhere on US soil only makes sense.

A threat assessment issued by the Department of Homeland Security last week suggested that Iran and its proxies "probably" pose a threat of targeted attacks in the US, as Reuters reported. But, the agency said, a large-scale physical strike was unlikely.

ABC News notes that the FBI issued a similar warning about potential drone attacks on the West Coast or along the US-Mexican border back in September, but that warning was about Mexican drug cartels seeking to attack the US.

Per Reuters, Governor Gavin Newsom's office downplayed the FBI bulletin, saying it was "one of many security updates ‌the ⁠state received from federal partners daily."  And Newsom spokesperson Diana Crofts-Pelayo added, "The Governor's Office of Emergency Services is actively working with state, local and federal security officials."

This should be cold comfort, but a reporter asked President Trump at a briefing outside the White House Wednesday if he was concerned about Iran attacking on US soil, and he said, "No, I'm not."

Dadpunk in the minivan lane

A group of Marin fathers has turned the daily chaos of parenting into a scrappy punk project called Le Minivans. Frontman Matt Swanson — who once played in Oakland dream-pop band Minipop — writes many of the songs while waiting in school pickup lines, turning routine domestic moments into fast, cathartic riffs.

The band formed in 2018 with four other local dads, leaning into what they call “dad punk,” where the stakes are low and the material comes straight from everyday life. Le Minivans will be performing Saturday evening, March 7 at Smiley's Schooner Saloon in Bolinas. — Marin Independent Journal

Second life for small things

Instead of throwing away broken appliances or torn clothing, some Bay Area residents are heading to pop-up repair events where volunteers take a crack at fixing them on the spot. Repair Café Silicon Valley sets up at libraries and community centers, pairing visitors with experienced “fixers” who troubleshoot everything from hair dryers to ripped seams.

Each person can bring two items, and most repairs wrap up in about half an hour once a station opens. Tulips by the windmill

Spring color is spreading across the lawn at Queen Wilhelmina Tulip Garden, beside the park’s historic Dutch windmill, where thousands of tulips are reaching their peak this month. Iran’s World Cup soccer team is scheduled to play matches in the US in June, but the Iranian Football Federation is threatening to pull the team out of the tournament in protest of the attacks raining down from host nation USA.

Iran has the opportunity to do the funniest possible thing, which would be to have the men’s Iranian national soccer team defeat the United States and knock them out of the World Cup tournament during the ongoing US military strikes against Iran. But these attacks are no funny matter to Iran’s government.

As such, KTVU reports that Iran’s Football Federation is threatening to pull their soccer team out of the World Cup tournament  as a protest move against the US and Israeli attacks on their country. The matches are set to begin June 11, and with North America the official host, many of this year’s World Cup matches are being played on US soil, even at Santa Clara’s Levi' s Stadium.

Iran’s team is not scheduled to play any games here in the Bay Area, though they are scheduled to play on US soil, with matches scheduled in other US host cities Seattle and LA.

That said, the US and Iranian teams could theoretically meet in the Knockout Round, a game that would have quite a riveting backdrop.

"That's never happened before," University of San Francisco sports management expert Michael Goldman told KTVU. "There would be financial and reputational issues associated, and certainly impact on the athletes and the fans, and an impact on FIFA in terms of how they manage the tournament and what happens to those games.”

KTVU speculates that Iran could also petition to have its matches moved to other host cities in Mexico or Canada, though that just seem pure speculation. Plus KTVU also reports “that outcome is considered unlikely, as match locations are already set.”

The irony is that President Trump, who ordered the military strikes on Iran, also threatened to move some World Cup matches too. His rationale was that the West Coast US cities are "run by radical left lunatics who don’t know what they’re doing."

Another irony? If Iran’s team did indeed quit the World Cup tournament, their likely replacement team would be that of Iraq, another nation with which Iran spent years at war.

Of course, the World Cup tournament is still a little more than three months away, and no one knows where the US invasion of Iraq will stand at that point. Will a new Iranian regime be in place? Will the hostilities be long over? Will Trump find a way to lose this war?

The world, and the Iranian men’s national soccer team, can only wait and wonder.

Despite Trump calling SF’s Anthropic a “Radical Left AI company run by people who have no idea what the real World is all about” and banning government use of their AI tool Claude, the administration still had to use Claude in its Iran attacks.

This past Friday afternoon and evening saw an insane set of news events play out for both the SF tech industry and global events. Early in the afternoon, President Trump declared he was severing all government ties with San Francisco-based AI company Anthropic after the company raised concerns that its tools could be used for AI-based mass murder and domestic surveillance.

By 7 pm Friday, Anthropic's SF rival OpenAI stepped in and said they would gladly take the contracts. And by 8 pm Friday night, the US was launching military attacks on Iran.  

When the Trump administration banned all government use of Anthropic and its well regarded tool Claude, Trump declared on Truth Social that “Leftwing nut jobs at Anthropic have made a DISASTROUS MISTAKE trying to STRONG-ARM the Department of War,” and that “I am directing EVERY Federal Agency in the United States Government to IMMEDIATELY CEASE all use of Anthropic’s technology. We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again!”

That is all quite hilarious when considered in the context that the US military still used Anthropic’s Claude tool anyway in this weekend’s attacks on Iran, according to a report in the Sunday Wall Street Journal. That Journal article is behind a paywall, but the same information was also reported in a free article at Axios separately at about that same time.

The Journal's reporting says the Pentagon used Claude in the Iran attacks to select targets, conduct theoretical battlefield simulations, and for general intelligence assessments. According to Axios, despite Trump’s bans and tantrums, “The Pentagon still sees Anthropic's Claude as superior to other models.”

And maybe getting banned by the Trump administration is good for business. As a separate Axios report points out, the Trump ban sent Anthropic’s Claude to the number one most downloaded app in the Apple App Store over the weekend, a position it still held as of Monday morning.
