The incident happened at around 1 pm on April 19 when many UC Berkeley fraternities and sororities were celebrating "Cal Day" open houses. The falling victim, 21-year-old Bandna Bhatti, was just three weeks from graduating, and this incident seems likely to raise some questions over how the Berkeley Phi Kappa Tau chapter handled the incident at their fraternity house.

"She cannot walk. She cannot move her body," Bhatti’s mother Sukh Bhatti said in the above KTVU interview. "She's paralyzed, asking me questions, ‘Can I graduate? Can I go to my graduation?’"

And according to a GoFundMe for Bandna Bhatti’s recovery, the medical issues are quite severe.

“In addition to a spinal fracture, Bandna also sustained severe injuries, including tearing of the dura with spinal fluid leakage, a scapular fracture, and a brain hematoma,” the campaign says. “These injuries are not only life-altering but will require extensive and ongoing medical care, including physical therapy, rehabilitation, and specialized support to help her navigate this new chapter.”

Bhatti was apparently on an external metal stairway at the fraternity house on Piedmont Avenue when she suffered the fall. She fell at least 12 feet and landed in a passageway outside the house, and apparently was not discovered for about 15 minutes.

And according to Bhatti’s family, once she was brought inside the house after the fall, she and the people who brought her into the house to recover were told to leave. Her friends took her back to her apartment, and for whatever reason, they did not call 911 until about seven hours later.

The Phi Kappa Tau national chapter gave a statement to KTVU saying, “Our thoughts are with the individual and their loved ones during this challenging time. The health, safety and well-being of all individuals in our community remain our highest priorities." They add they are cooperating with investigators.

Help Bandna after her tragic accident.
Four people are recovering from their injuries today, after a multi-vehicle collision Sunday on Mission Street.

The crash went down at 6:33 Sunday evening, according to the San Francisco Police Department, when at least three vehicles — including a blue Chrysler sedan, a tan Honda SUV, and a Yellow Cab — collided at 8th and Mission Streets.

Further details on the exact circumstances of the crash, which remains under investigation, were not available at publication time.

However, police did confirm that four people were hurt in the collision: A 64-year-old man suffered a neck injury, a 66-year-old man was left dizzy by the crash, and two men aged 27 and 20 suffered "unknown" injuries.

The victims of the collision "were transported to two different hospitals for medical treatment," police say. According to the SFPD, none of their injuries are considered life-threatening.

BART Train Hits Person At 12th Street Station

Egads.
Last Wednesday, Oakland A's Brandon McCarthy was hit on the head with a ball that, if you saw it, looked like one of the most frightening moments in baseball. Although he waked off the field, reports said that McCarthy suffered a 'life-threatening" injury. However, after some surgery and rest, he's still alive and walking around San Francisco with vim and vigor. So much so, in fact, that his wife, Amanda McCarthy, tweeted this pic of her husband and his massive scar.

At around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, an Amtrak train traveling 15 to 20 mph collided with another train unloading passengers in Jack London Square at Webster Street and Embarcadero. At least 18 passengers (or 16, according to HuffPo) were injured as a result of the crash. Most of the injuries were "bumps and bruises" with one girl suffering a broken arm.

"It was an awful jolt," said Alton Smith, a passenger who explained to KTVU (via Oakland Tribune) he suffered a sore neck after the crash. "I was sitting down, but I don't know what would have happened had I been standing up."

As far as blame goes, Oakland Fire Department battalion chief Emon Usher said, "According to the Amtrak representative, the train traveling should have never continued past the red signal...It's an equivalent to a red light."

The driver of an adorable SUV crashed into a row of puny parked cars in the city's Russian Hill hood early this morning. According to reports, the big beauty was heading "down a steep hill on northbound Taylor Street" before rolling over and smashing into the vehicles. The mammoth vehicle finally came to a stop on Union Street. While specifics on injuries are not yet available, "[o]fficers and medical units responded" to the scene. Anybody see what went down? Sounds jarring. We'll up date with more info as it comes in to us.

UPDATE: Raw Footage of Muni Train Crash

KTVU has some choice footage of last Saturday's Muni crash over on King Street near AT&T Park. Since major news networks inexplicably don't believe in the religion of Embedded Code, we are forced to link to it here. (Oh, and then you have to click on "RAW VIDEO: Watch Muni Surveillance Footage Shot On Trains Involved In Collision.") <del>If some kind soul wants to upload or find us the same footage, YouTube- or Flickr Video-style, we'd be most appreciative.</del> Forget KTVU and their pre-commercialed footage. Here it is uninterrupted!

Anyway, what the Muni camera captures is pretty jarring. Literally. The train must have been traveling abnormally fast to throw passengers around like that. Ouch, indeed.

KCBS reports:

Investigators say one of the MUNI rail cars involved in a crash Saturday afternoon was speeding and the driver may have been talking on his cell phone. (...) MUNI says drivers are not allowed to talk on the phone while operating a vehicle. Investigators are trying to obtain the operator's cell phone records.

What? Muni drivers are ALWAYS on their mobile communication devices. And they're not supposed to be? We are stunned. Anyway, the car was allegedly "going 17 miles per hour in a 3 mph zone" right before the crash. Jesus.

If you recall, last week's harrowing Muni train crash over on King Street near AT&T landed 12 people in the hospital, all of them with non-life threatening injuries. The drivers of the trains have been relieved of their driving duties as the investigation continues.
The accident happened near AT&T Park on King Street between Third and Fourth streets, and none of the injuries were life-threatening. Allegedly.

But why the T-Third didn't stop is anyone's guess. As of now, Muni has no idea. When the trains are underground, the lines run are "run on an automated control system." But when they move above ground, the drivers are in control. Ideally.

Drug tests have been administered, heads have shook in continued disappointment, and pointless meetings have been scheduled to get to the bottom of Saturday's accident. This comes of the heels of SFMTA receiving a cool 7 million from the Office of Homeland Security in order to improve safety condition on Muni lines.

There is no Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) service on the J-Church line between 16th and Church streets and San Jose and Ocean avenues due to an injury accident between an LRV and a pickup truck at 21st and Chattanooga streets. The accident took place at approximately 1:15 p.m.
