Woman Killed After Being Hit by Muni Bus
A Muni bus struck and killed a 40 year old woman today around 7:30 this morning. The bus, the 27-Bryant, was on Ellis Street making a right onto Leavenworth Street when the pedestrian, who had been crossing the street, was hit. It is not known yet what she was doing when she was hit, although police say there was a green light for both. She was pronounced dead on the scene and as of 9:30, police were still out on the street investigating things.
This was the second Muni related incident in a month as someone was struck and killed on the J-Church line.

I wish you guys would switch off the snarkasm when fatalities are involved.
I'm just saying.
Yeah, Jon, like this 70-year-old that got hit by a bus back in January. Ha ha. What a dumb ass! Too bad he survived. And the woman you're writing about who was killed today, I just read this about the accident:
"We just covered her up. She was wearing a hooded sweater, and we put the hood over her head. There were tire marks on her clothes," Moore said.
The victim looked "no more than 18," Moore said.
Hilarious, right?! Sure seems like survival of the fittest to me. You should submit it to the Darwin Awards.
Totally agree with the above two comments. If anyone has ever BEEN on a Muni bus, you know that a lot of Muni drivers are reckless and dangerous. A couple of weeks ago I was riding the #1 up Presidio towards California when the driver decided to skip all the traffic in front of us, lay on the horn and drive on the wrong side of the road until we got through the intersection. Everyone was screaming and terrified.
San Francisco has the 3rd highest rate of fatalities/injuries caused by public transportation vehicles of any city in the U.S. That is the problem, not "Darwinism" on the end of the injured or killed.
The better question is how the Muni bus misses the pedestrian. If the light was green for both, that means the victim was crossing the street with a green walk signal when the bus turned right into her.
What ever happened to looking in the crosswalk before plowing pedestrians who have the right-of-way?
The bus should have been looking out for pedestrians crossing Leavenworth, if it was making a right turn onto Leavenworth from Ellis. The pedestrian definitely should have the right to cross first on a green light. Seems like a lot of pedestrian deaths in this area of the TL lately.
Alright, I took out the offending paragraph and apologize to those offended. It was a inartful way of asking a question and trying to start some sort of debate.
Sorry about that.
My condolences to the woman's family.
Do any of the bus cameras point out the front window? That ought to be provide concrete information, right?
While I don't disagree with the concept of "pedestrian rights," I must express a contrary opinion: While a green light gives the pedestrian the 'go' signal for crossing the street, let's be honest, very few, if any, people stop for pedestrians in SF. I was riding the 38 on Geary yesterday and a pedestrian was crossing one of the streets with out a stoplight. Traffic actually stopped to let them cross and I was stunned. Based on that, the pedestrians rights are secondary to the pedestrians *need* to look out for the multi-ton death machines careening down the rode regardless of whether it is Muni or not.
i agree with the preceding comments. you should definitely turn off the douchebaggery when it comes to fatalities. the person killed in this accident didn't do anything wrong. so your "wit," in this case, is a little jacked.
as people have seen and pointed out, MUNI drivers are definitely more than a little kamikaze behind the wheel. an innocent person's intelligence shouldn't be challenged when it comes to just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
you guys were out of line.
The exact same thing happened with the 27 line a year or two ago.
It was around 6:30 am, and a woman was crossing Van Ness at Jackson on a green light. The bus was turning left and didn't see her, and she was also killed.
It seems like all of the Muni fatalities I've heard about in recent years happened when the pedestrian had the right of way...
Wow... SFist sure has got coldhearted lately. Jesus.
There should be NO "they both had the light." They need the lights where pedestrians have the light to cross, THEN the cars have the light to turn. This is ridiculous and accidents happen this way far, FAR too often in this city.
Also, it would probably help if Muni drivers woke the f**k up and paid attention. They're the ones in the multi-ton bus. The onus is on them to watch where they're going.
I agree with BlueCanary ... it is the only way pedestrians who are not quick, nimble, young, well-abled, drugged/drunk will safely cross our streets legally (with a green for pedestrians). Barring that, maybe we need to have a concealed weapon permit law so that pedestrians are given a little bit more respect by out of control drivers (and muggers for that matter) as possibly having evens to bust a non-fatal cap in their ass if they physically harm the pedestrian.
